Program Goal

Our goal is to provide a warm welcome and comprehensive support for University of Oregon conditionally admitted students so they become Ducks from day one. They’ll live on campus, improve their English proficiency, and then immediately launch their regular studies at UO

What is UO Global Welcome?

The University of Oregon Global Welcome is a partnership between the Division of Global Engagement, Office of Admissions, and Lane Community College to provide warm welcome and comprehensive support for University of Oregon conditionally admitted students to integrate fully into our campus, forge friendships with other UO students, while improving their English proficiency.  Students holding F1 and J-1 visas will:

  • live in UO residence halls with university dining to experience full campus life
  • enroll in a zero-credit UO study skills preparation course
  • participate in international student orientation
  • work with an English conversation partner
  • engage in place-based experiential learning and language practice
  • have full access to campus life and services such as Health Center, extensive Recreation Center, Student Clubs, Outdoor Program, Intramural and Club Sports, extensive Student Union, and International Student and Scholar Services team
  • take English learning courses through partnership with nearby Lane Community College.

Our students include UO students who are conditionally admitted by UO Admissions and exchange and visiting students who join the University of Oregon academic community on our beautiful campus.

Q: What is UO Global Welcome? 

UO Global Welcome provides comprehensive wrap-around support for conditionally admitted University of Oregon students who need additional English language learning instruction to be fully matriculated at the University of Oregon. Students will be UO students and enroll in English language instruction at Lane Community College.

Q: What support will UO Global Welcome students have? 

Students will have an opportunity to live in UO residence halls to experience full campus life, enroll in a zero-credit UO study skills preparation course, participate in international student orientation, work with an English conversation partner, and engage in place-based experiential learning and language practice. Students will take English learning courses at Lane Community College in small classes with other English language learners. Students will receive support from the International Student and Scholar Services department including attending International Student Orientation. When students meet full English level admissions requirements of the UO Admissions, they will continue full course enrollment as matriculated students at the University of Oregon.

Q: What is the cost of the UO Global Welcome? 

The Program Cost per term/quarter is $7,100. In addition, students should budget approximately n-campus Housing $5,800-8,000 per term/quarter for on- and off-campus living. For on-campus housing housing costs, refer to Room and Meal Cost plans.

Q: What is Lane Community College? 

Lane Community College is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and provides comprehensive, accessible, quality, learning-centered educational opportunities that promote student success. The downtown campus is a 23 minute walk, 13 minute bike ride, or 7 minute free bus ride from the heart of the University of Oregon campus.

Q. What is the Lane Community College English as a Second Language program? 

The mission of English as a Second Language is to assist non-native speakers, both resident and international students, to achieve educational, workplace or other personal goals by facilitating English language learning and intercultural understanding in a supportive, respectful environment. 

Q: Will conditionally admitted international exchange students be able to take English learning courses while on exchange at the University of Oregon?  

Yes, students will be enrolled in the UO Global Welcome program if their English test score does not meeting UO Admissions' minimum English proficiency requirement. Universities will use the Exchange and Visiting student nomination process on the UO International Student and Scholar Services website. Students seeking admission to the University of Oregon can find information about the application process on the UO Admissions website. UO Global Welcome is designed for conditionally admitted students who need one or two quarters of English language instruction before they can be fully admitted to the UO.
