Social Security Number

NOTE: A Social Security Number is a lifetime number. If you already received a SSN in the past, you do not need to apply for a new one. If you do not have employment, but have a taxable scholarship or fellowship that needs to be reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), you must apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

F-1 Students

You are eligible to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) if you have been hired for an on-campus job or received authorization for another type of F-1 employment, such as CPT or OPT.

For ON-CAMPUS employment, here are the steps to apply for a social security number:

  1. Fill out the application for social security card. Go to https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf
  2. Bring the following documents with you to the Social Security Administration office:
  • Social Security Application (filled out in blue or black ink)
  • Passport
  • Original I-20 (requires "wet" signature from ISSS. If you need a reprinted I-20 with "wet" signature, contact ISSS at intl@uoregon.edu)
  • I-94 (retrieve at cbp.gov/I94)
  • Social Security Verification form (requires “wet” signature from ISSS)

After your visit, SSA will mail a receipt to your mailing address within a few days. You should give this receipt to your hiring department or on-campus employer. The social security card may take up to 6 weeks for delivery because they are being mailed from the east coast.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PAY: The social security number/card or receipt is not needed to start work and receive pay, but will be needed as an employee. Your UO hiring department only needs to file Form I-9 with Payroll to begin paying you.The social security process will not delay your pay; the SSA is backed up and taking 2-6 weeks from time of appointment to receive the social security card, and the Eugene office is only doing 9-appointments per week.
