Pre-Arrival Checklist for UO Global Welcome (ESL) Students

Welcome to the University of Oregon! We are excited to have you join our global community in beautiful Eugene, Oregon. 

As a University of Oregon (UO) conditionally admitted international student, you are required to enroll full-time in English language courses before you can take full-time classes at the UO. The UO has partnered with Lane Community College (Lane), based in Eugene, Oregon, to provide the English language instruction. This UO + Lane partnership is called UO Global Welcome. 

As a student admitted to the UO Global Welcome, you will: 

  • Take English classes at Lane’s downtown Eugene location
  • Live in UO residence halls with university dining to experience the full on-campus student life
  • Enroll in a UO study skills preparation course in addition to your English language courses
  • Participate in UO International Student Orientation and Lane International Student Orientation
  • Be matched with an English conversation community volunteer
  • Have full access to UO student life activities and events, and services such as the University Health Center, recreation center, libraries, and student union.
  • Have full access to Lane student life activities, peer mentors, conversation tables and events
  • Full transition to full enrollment in University of Oregon courses once you complete UO Global Welcome program.  

Program Cost

The program cost is $7,100 per term and includes Lane tuition, fees, and insurance. On-campus housing is estimated to cost $5,800-8,000 per term. See Room and Meal Cost plans for on-campus housing information. Off-campus housing costs will vary.   

English Placement Test 

Before you arrive in Eugene, you will take an English placement test so that Lane can enroll you in the correct English course level. Lane will send you details for this placement test soon after your application is received from the UO. You will remain enrolled in full-time English language courses at Lane until you meet the UO’s English proficiency requirement. At that point, you will be able to enroll full-time in UO academic courses. If you submit a new English test score to the UO Office of Admissions which meets the English proficiency requirement for regular admission, you can enroll in regular UO classes your first term.

F-1 Student Visa 

You will receive Form I-20 from Lane Community College within two weeks of your admission. Form I-20 is required to schedule a US visa appointment to apply for an F-1 student visa.  

Pre-Arrival Checklist:

  • Claim your UO Duck ID. Your Duck ID is your primary UO network login and is required to apply for on-campus housing and access online portals. Refer to How to Claim your DuckID Instructions. You will need to know your UO ID number (Nine-digit number that starts with 95x-xxx-xxx) and Personal Access Code (PAC). Students receive their PAC in their admissions email. If you did not receive a temporary PAC or have misplaced your temporary PAC, please email admissions@uoregon.edu. After you claim your Duck ID, you may have to wait a few days before you can apply for on-campus housing or access other online UO portals.  
     
  • Set up your UOmail. Once you claim your Duck ID, set up the UOmail app on your phone or laptop. Your UO email address will be your "duckid"@uoregon.edu.  
     
  • Apply for on-campus housing or find off-campus housing
     
  • Submit proof of immunizations 
     
  • Understand UO's health insurance coverage. You will be automatically enrolled in the UO’s student health benefits plan and billed approximately $1,300 each term. The student insurance plan will also cover you while you are taking English language courses at Lane.  

Next Steps 

  • The UO will submit the Lane student application on your behalf.
  • Lane will then send you three emails before you start:
    1. Welcome email
    2. Email with your Lane ID number and Lane email
    3. Email with information about the English placement test and Lane orientation  

Required Orientations 

You are required to attend two orientations:  

  • UO International Student Orientation (ISO) on September 21 & 22, 2026
  • Lane International Student Orientation on September 23, 2026

Arrival

  • Please book your arrival to Eugene, Oregon
  • Move into your residence hall or apartment before the start of UO’s orientation on September 21. If you cannot move into your residence hall or apartment before September 21, you can apply for the Short-Term Homestay Program and live with a local host family for a few days before moving into your permanent housing.
