The University of Oregon academic calendar is divided into 4 quarters or terms as follows:
- Fall Term: September to December
- Winter Term: January to March
- Spring Term: April to June
Registration Dates
Registration for classes opens in late-May for Fall Term, late-November for Winter Term, and late-February for Spring Term. You will be able to register once the registration schedule opens for your first term.
You will be able to see your registration date and time in your Duckweb account when priority registration opens for your first term. The International Student & Scholar Services office will remind you when course registration opens.
- Log into duckweb
- Click on Student Menu > Registration Menu > Check Registration Eligibility.
Class Schedule and Descriptions
The class schedule can be viewed on duck web. If the class schedule is not yet available for the term you are starting, you will need to wait until registration opens for the term.
Classes are divided into “locations” – see description below.
- Eugene Main Campus: On-campus meeting times and locations as scheduled.
- Asynchronous Online: No on-campus meetings or scheduled meeting times – the course can be completed at the student’s own pace. Location = ASYNC WEB. Please note that ASYNC WEB courses classes have an additional $25 fee per credit, which is not covered by exchange program tuition waivers. Students are responsible for paying online course fees.
- Synchronous Online: No on-campus meetings. Class meeting days and times as scheduled and will include live engagement during scheduled class periods. Location = SYNC WEB
Some classes at the University of Oregon require you to attend both larger lectures and smaller discussion or lab sections, which allows you to engage with the content in smaller groups or participate in hands-on learning. In these cases, you are required to register for the course lecture and, if applicable, one discussion or lab section.
Each course at the UO is assigned a course level. Courses numbered 100–499 are undergraduate courses; 100–299 are lower division (first- or second-year level), and 300–499 are upper division (third- or fourth-year level). Upper division courses are generally more rigorous and are more likely to have pre-requisites. Courses numbered 500 and above are graduate-level courses.
Exchange and visiting students can take courses both inside and outside their academic major. Popular and upper division courses may fill up very quickly, so students must be flexible with their course selections and register for classes as soon as they can. Course registration is on a first-come first-served basis. We cannot guarantee enrollment in specific courses.
Courses with Pre-Requisites
Some courses require prior knowledge in order to register for the course. At the UO, if you have not earned prior credit in your home university for courses with prerequisites, you may not be able to register for the advanced course.
Pre-requisite requirements will be noted in Duckweb on the course page when you try to register for that course. You cannot register for courses with pre-requisites unless the pre-requisite requirement is waived. Exchange students will need to be able to demonstrate that they have sufficient academic background and preparation to be successful in courses with pre- requisites.
- Some courses are restricted to students in a specific major
- Exchange students are not eligible to take graduate-level courses in the School of Law
To request a waiver of a pre-requisite requirement, you must contact an academic advisor in your major. We have provided you with a list of academic advisors by college/school and major at the end of this guide.
When you contact an academic advisor, include the following information in your email:
- Your UO ID number (starts with 95)
- The list of classes in the academic advisor’s department that you hope to take
- A copy of the transcript you submitted in your exchange application, so that the advisors can review your academic background
Fees
All business courses and some art, architecture, biology, dance, sports and outdoor classes have special fees to pay for lab equipment, special programs, trips, supplies, or studio fees: these costs range between $20 to $100 and are not covered by the exchange program’s tuition waivers. Students will be responsible for paying these additional course fees
To confirm if courses have restrictions or additional course fees, students should pay close attention to the “Notes” sections of the course page.
Credit Requirements
Full-time enrollment is required for J-1 exchange and visiting students. The minimum full-time study load is 12 credits for undergraduates (9 credits for graduate students.) Of the 12 credits required for full-time enrollment, only one online class (up to 4 credits) can count toward a full course of study each term. This means you must enroll in at least 8 in-person or hybrid classes (classes with a lab, discussion group or exams which must be taken in-person.)
Email Communication Policy
The UO must be able to communicate quickly and efficiently with enrolled students in order to conduct official University business. You are required to use and check your UO email account regularly prior to arrival and during your exchange program. Refer to the Pre-Arrival Checklist for instructions on how to set up your UO email.
Before You Can Register
You cannot register for classes until these steps are completed.
- Claim your Duck ID
Your Duck ID is your primary network login for everything on campus. You must "claim" your Duck ID to complete many pre-arrival tasks. You will need to wait a few days after you claim your Duck ID to use it to access online portals.

- Submit proof of Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) immunization.
To submit proof of MMR vaccine, follow the instructions on the Pre-Arrival Checklist.
How to Register for Classes
- Contact an Academic Advisor (see list below) for help selecting your courses
- Register for courses in your MyUO (Duckweb) student account. Duckweb is an online tool students use to register and manage their student account. For instructions, refer to Register for Classes.
Important Notes:
- The UO cannot guarantee students will get into every course in which they wish to enroll.
- Students cannot register for classes until they complete required steps on the Pre-Arrival Checklist.
- Students cannot register for classes until proof of vaccination for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) is submitted (see Pre-Arrival Checklist).
