ISSS sent the following email to International Graduate students on June 11, 2025
Dear International Graduate Students,
As I’m sure you have read by now, on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the US federal administration issued an executive order banning all travel to the US for nationals from 12 countries and partially banning travel for nationals from another 7 countries, effective June 9, 2025. We are contacting you directly as your country of citizenship is one of the 19 countries impacted by this ban.
What does a travel ban mean?
If you are physically present in the US when the executive order becomes effective on June 9, 2025, or if you are outside the US and have already been issued a US visa, then you are not subject to the travel ban and may continue to prepare for your program at the University of Oregon in the fall. If this is your situation, please reply to this email at intl@uoregon.edu to confirm you are either in the US physically or already have been issued a US visa.
If you are outside the US as of June 9, 2025, and do not have a valid US entry visa, you are no longer eligible for a visa and cannot travel to the US for the start of your program in the fall. If this is your situation, please do the following right away:
- Contact your graduate program director and the Director of Admissions in the Division of Graduate Studies at admitgradstudies@uoregon.edu to discuss alternative program options that might be available, or to request to defer your admission to a future term.
- If you have been offered a Graduate Employee position, contact your GE employer/UO department to discuss whether alternative options for employment are feasible.
While we don’t know how long this travel ban will be in effect, we are committed to welcoming and supporting you even if you cannot enroll this fall. We all hope that this travel ban will be overturned or paused by the US federal court system, but until then, please be in direct contact with your graduate program.
Please also know that we are working closely with legal counsel in and outside the UO, as well as peer institutions and professional associations, to ensure we have a full and accurate interpretation of this travel restriction order, and how it might evolve over time. We will post updates as we have them to our International Student & Scholar Services website at Immigration Resource FAQ.
For now, I will not cancel your F-1 SEVIS record until the start of fall term. If you defer admission, I will update your I-20 with the new program start date. The SEVIS ID will remain the same.
The University of Oregon welcomes all its international students and values the contributions you make to our campus community. We will continue to communicate new information as we receive it.
Warm Regards,
Becky Crabtree
Director
