Enrollment & Health Insurance Policy

Enrollment Policy

As per federal regulations, only one online class can count toward a full course of study for an F-1 or J-1 student during each term or semester. Full-time enrollment for undergraduate students is a minimum of 12 credits per term. 8 out of 12 credits must be in-person or hybrid classes. Full-time enrollment for graduate and Law students is a minimum of 9 credits per term/semester. 6 out of 9 credits must be in-person or hybrid classes.

The ISSS office will strictly enforce this policy each term and communicate with students as early as possible so they can adjust their class schedules, if found to be out of compliance.

  • Hybrid classes are OK as long as there is an in-person component like a lab or discussion group.

  • Dissertation, thesis, independent study credits are not considered online classes.

Student Health Insurance Policy

All international students are automatically enrolled in and billed for the UO Student Health Benefits Plan. The cost for the UO Student Health Benefits Plan for 2024-2025 is $1,172 per term ($1,758 per semester for Law students) and provides excellent coverage, low deductibles and low out of pocket limits. If you have other health insurance, you can request to waive out of the UO student health benefits plan as long as you meet the waiver criteria. (Graduate Employees have a different waiver process - see next paragraph). Waiver criteria and instructions can be found on the University Health Center website.

Waiver submissions for fall term starts August 1, 2024. At that time you can fill out the waiver form and upload your documents as follows:

To Submit a Waiver Request:

  • Gather any/all documentation about your other health insurance coverage.
  • Visit the Pacific Source website.
  • Create an account (if you already have an account with PacificSource, you will use that login information).
  • Submit a waiver request.
  • Upload copies of your documentation.

Graduate Employees (GEs): you are eligible for the GTFF Insurance Plan administered by the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation (GTFF) labor union which costs a fraction of the student plan. However, you must first enroll in the GTFF insurance plan. The GTFF benefits coordinator will then waive you out of the UO Student Health Benefits Plan.
