Insurance Policy

Student Health Insurance Requirement

All international students are automatically enrolled in and billed for the UO Student Health Benefits Plan. The cost for the UO Student Health Benefits Plan for 2024-25 is $3,516 per year paid out over 3 terms ($1,172 per term) or 2 semesters ($1,758 per semester for Law students) and provides excellent coverage, low deductibles and low out of pocket limits. If you have other health insurance, you can request to waive out of the UO student health benefits plan as long as you meet the waiver criteria. (Graduate Employees have a different waiver process - see next paragraph). Insurance waiver criteria can be found on the University Health Services website

Student Insurance Waiver

International students with an existing insurance plan which meets or exceeds the university’s standards may request an insurance waiver. To be approved for an insurance waiver, students must provide insurance policy documentation of health coverage which summarizes the covered benefits. A copy of the UO waiver criteria on a certificate will not meet the university’s standards. Incomplete or inaccurate waiver submissions will not be considered. Please note that the waiver requirements are very strict. If a student’s health insurance plan fails to meet each of these requirements, they will be denied an insurance waiver and will remain enrolled in the UO Health Plan. Waiver criteria and instructions can be found here: https://health.uoregon.edu/insurancewaivers

The deadline to request a waiver for spring term 2025 is April 7, 2025.

Graduate Employees (GEs)

You are eligible for the GTFF Insurance Plan, administered by the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation (GTFF) labor union, which costs a fraction of the student plan, but you must enroll in the GTFF insurance plan to waive out of the Student Health Benefits Plan. Once you enroll in the GTFF insurance plan, the benefits coordinator will waive you out of the Student Health Benefits Plan and the charge of $1,172 will be reversed. You do not have to pay this charge if you are planning to enroll in the GTFF insurance plan.
