If you are an F-1 student you should notify the Office of International Affairs in case you plan to take a temporary leave from the UO or if you plan to leave the UO permanently.
Temporary Leave from UO
If you need to stop your studies temporarily for one or more terms, but still plan on returning in the future, you must meet with an international student advisor to request a temporary leave of absence. The advisor will discuss your options with you. In most cases, taking a leave of absence will require you to remain outside of the US for the term or terms you are on leave. To request a leave of absence, please complete a Departure Form and bring it to the Office of International Affairs for a meeting with an international student advisor. Note: Graduate students who want to take a leave during the academic year must first receive permission from the Graduate School for on-leave status.
Returning to the UO after a Temporary Leave
If you are returning to the UO after a temporary leave and you have been outside of the US for more than five months, you will need to get a new initial attendance I-20 to return to the US. E-mail the SEVIS Coordinator to request a new initial I-20 for the term you wish to re-enroll. You will be asked to provide new evidence of financial resources and support equal to one year of estimated expenses.
If you have been gone from the UO for one year or longer (four or more terms), you will also need to follow Re-Enrollment procedures.
Leaving the UO Permanently
If you are an F-1 student and plan to leave the UO permanently, please download a Departure Form and submit it to the Office of International Affairs. In certain cases, a meeting with an international student advisor may be required. Permanent departure reasons include:
- Transferring to another school
- Returning home after stopping studies permanently or graduating from the UO
- Returning home after completing post-completion OPT (or stopping OPT early)
Once you depart the United States, your F-1 SEVIS record will be completed.
Requesting a Complete Withdrawal from Classes
International students cannot withdraw completely from classes without the authorization of an international student advisor. In order to withdraw completely from a term, you must submit a request in DuckWeb and then meet with an international student advisor for final approval. Your request will not be approved or processed until you meet with an international student advisor. To make a complete withdrawal request in DuckWeb, follow these steps:
- Log into DuckWeb
- Choose “Student Menu”
- From within the Student Menu, click “Registration Menu”
- Click “Completely Withdraw from the Term(s)” and select the appropriate term
- Complete ALL screens until the very end
- At the end, enter your UO or private email address and click the button “I Agree” - you must click “I Agree” or the request will not be received or processed.
After you click on “I Agree,” come to the Office of International Affairs to meet with an international student advisor during drop-in advising hours.
